Five Helpful Tips to Avoid Credit Card Debt

There are millions of people across the United States who have made poor decisions with their credit. They have either taken out too much credit and spent most of it or they have not been able to control their credit card debt. Whatever the case may be, they are not able to live the life that they have always wanted to live. Here are five helpful tips to avoid credit card debt ruining your life.

1) Do not overspend in the first place. Not overspending can help to make sure that you will not end up in credit card debt. Set a budget and make sure that you follow it. When you make a budget that stays within how much money you make as well as how much you spend, you will be able to live a comfortable life. However, when you start spending more than you make, you either need to decrease spending or increase income. Either way, something has to budge in order to make things work properly.

2) Take advantage of the grace period. Most credit card consumers know that they do not have to pay interest when the balance of a card is paid off each and every month. However, when you make the minimum payment by the due date and then pay off the full balance by the end of the grace period you are able to take an even further loan of money from the bank. Some consumers, if purchases are made early enough in the billing period, may be able to take virtual loans that are equal to two months in duration.

3) Use a 0% interest credit card. 0% credit cards are often offered to consumers with excellent credit as part of a promotional technique. These credit cards may have 0% interest for six months or twelve months. It often depends upon the issuing bank as to how long the promotional period is. However, any charges that are made within the first six months do not have any interest charged to them as long as they are paid off by the end of the promotional period.

4) Use a 0% balance transfer. There are many credit cards that offer 0% balance transfers or low interest balance transfers. While a fee may be charged by the credit card company, 11% interest is much better than 25% interest! You may actually have a chance at eliminating your credit card debt once and for all.

5) Save some money for yourself. Saving money in a savings account will help you to minimize the times when you might otherwise have to finance an emergency with a credit card account. For example, having an emergency fund for car repairs that can pay a $500 unexpected car repair bill can help you to avoid having to pay $500 plus interest. While this is not always going to be possible it is one idea that can help to minimize credit card debt.

the interest never stops accumulating until the balance is paid off. Even if your principle balance is only $5 you will still accumulate interest on that little $5 that you still owe, so your total balance would be $5.35. Understand? As long as you owe, there is still interest adding up. Usually the interest is added to the loan balance monthly. I would call Sallie Mae if I were you and have them send you a bill in the mail. They have always sent it to me, even if I was still in my grace period. Tell them you are in grace, but want to start paying it off early. Even though your will only be paying off the interest, that is better than nothing. If you can only pay that now, fine, but soon you will start having to make bigger payments to cut into the principal of the loan.

By Adriana Noton Debt consolidation is often touted as the perfect solution to financial difficulties. In fact, though it can help with temporary difficulty, it is far from being the perfect solution. It can be a salvation when things get so tight that it is impossible to make minimum payments, but should not be considered the solution of first choice. When a person has several small debts, each with a minimum payment, the overall monthly obligation an get to be quite a lot. The obligation on several small ones can a higher percentage than a larger one. Thus, when payments get to be more than a person can handle, combining them into one loan can result in a much lower payment that the combination of several smaller ones. Though many think consolidating their loans is the best way to manage them, that is not necessarily true. They have not really done anything to improve the overall situation. It really may make the situation worse. The overall amount owed is greater, but payments may…
